Oakland Public Library Family Literacy Pilot Program

(August 2015) Open Gate, Inc., in partnership with Oakland Public Library completed a successful pilot project, Fathers and Family Literacy. This was a fun, interactive workshop in which long term formerly incarcerated individuals learned to reconnect with their families. The program debuted at Center Point Oakland Day Reporting Center with the support of director, Angelito Kemp.

The focus of this program is, ‘learn how reading children’s books can help you’:
• be close and have fun with your child
• become a better reader
• help your child learn to be a good reader

This program was such a success that Oakland Public Library is now developing an extended version of the program which is scheduled to start this month.
